Fulfilling a Dream has the Power to Change You

The Power of Daniel

There are few things in my life that surprise me – this is despite running a $125m global cyber security business tracking world-wide hackers, being a Star on ABC’s “Shark Tank” and driving Ferraris at 200 miles per hour. In early April 2014, I had the opportunity to speak at the International Car Wash Show with my fellow Shark, Daymond John.

More importantly, I had the opportunity to meet someone who truly surprised me; he was Daniel Wang, a brave, optimistic 16-year-old boy who has survived and beaten brain cancer for the past 3 1/2 years. It was through the Chicago-based charitable organization Cancer Kiss My Cooley organization that Daniel entered my life.

It’s More Than Just Business

I think and breathe my business, and I am hugely proud of and committed to building my cyber security business in a very exciting field that is constantly changing. It’s a thrill to run this business and see the people, technologies and satisfied customers we connect with every day. I also work on building the many businesses I’ve partnered with through the 10+ years I’ve been on “Shark Tank” and “Dragon’s Den,” the Canadian equivalent. Ever since the beginning of my career, I’ve donated time, money and effort towards numerous wonderful causes, charities and organizations but Daniel was different.

A Small Moment Can Do a Lot

My life is adrenaline — busy 24/7 with cross-country travel to see customers, LA studio time for “Shark Tank,” numerous speeches monthly, Ferrari races, and a busy family life with my wife and three wonderful children. I love being busy and thrive on action. But the two hours that I spent in Chicago were different, a small moment in my life that I got to share with Daniel.

Left-Handed Gift Cards

Daniel endured 72 days in the hospital after he underwent emergency brain cancer surgery following his shocking diagnosis. Over the past 3 1/2 years he has had weekly speech therapy to learn how to control his breath and voice, weekly physical therapy to relearn how to walk with his right leg. But his use of his right arm never returned. Undaunted, Daniel taught himself how to use his left hand and draw beautiful illustrations that provided comfort in the hospitals. He developed a line of inspirational cards and a website, HopeThroughCards.com, to sell these cards that he drew with his left hand.

It’s All About the Attitude

I spent a half hour in the Ferrari driving around Chicago with big smiles coming from Daniel at every turn. But it was the quiet moments that were the most special. Daniel shared with me his feeling and challenges in the ongoing therapy with the most optimistic attitude I’ve ever heard anyone express.

Just Ask – Everyone is Willing to Help

We wanted to go above Daniel’s wish to meet me. He met Daymond and I in the green room before our speech. Daniel asked every question he could think of and Daymond and I gladly answered them. This was just the beginning of Daniel’s special day. We called Nick Mancuso from Lake Forest Sports Cars Limited in Chicago to provide a Ferrari California (Daniel’s favourite car) for us to drive and a backpack of Ferrari goodies to take home. Tyler McQuarrie, my racing coach, donated a Go Pro to install on the windshield to record our adventure and the Rosebud restaurant in Little Italy in Chicago provided a beautiful lunch to greet Daniel and his family when he showed up in his new ride with his favourite Shark. What a thrilling moment for the Wang family!

Motivation Goes Both Ways

I’m in the professional motivation business at my company, in my speeches and through my two books. I try my best to instill hope and optimism to each of the Shark Tank entrepreneurs who lay out their hearts and souls on the show for us to determine their fate. But Daniel was different. He provided me with more motivation than I could ever rally.

The Power of Daniel

We all live busy professional and personal lives but please remember to make the time. There are Daniels in every town, school and hospital. Enjoy the following video and share it with friends and family.

I look forward to writing my next post soon.

To your success,

Robert

St. Charles woman runs with a purpose

Stacey Elders of St. Charles participated in the Chicago half-marathon for the first time Sunday. In the process, she raised $6,000 for the Huntley-based organization Cancer Kiss My Cooley, which raises community awareness for pediatric brain tumors.

Stacey Elders of St. Charles participated in the Chicago half-marathon for the first time Sunday. In the process, she raised $6,000 for the Huntley-based organization Cancer Kiss My Cooley, which raises community awareness for pediatric brain tumors.

Doctors diagnosed St. Charles resident Stacey Elders with Type 1 diabetes about seven years ago, just a week and a half before her 30th birthday.

Knowing it would help her manage diabetes and boost her bid to still eat junk food once in a while, Elders took up running shortly thereafter.

Elders covers five to 10 miles on most mornings to stay upbeat and active, but until Sunday had not experienced the other runner’s high of competing for someone else. Her efforts entering her first Chicago Half Marathon raised $6,000 for Cancer Kiss My Cooley, a nonprofit organization geared toward raising community awareness for pediatric brain tumors.

“It’s great to see them turn something so unbelievably sad and tragic into something so positive and tremendous benefiting these children,” Elders said. “It gave me something to run for instead of just myself.”

Elders linked up with Huntley-based Cancer Kiss My Cooley – “cooley” or “coolie” is Italian slang for one’s backside – through her husband’s ties.

Jason Elders has known Joe and Cinnamon Kettner since high school. In May 2010, the couple’s 6-year-old son, Carter, died from inoperable brain cancer, 15 months after his diagnosis. Carter Kettner frequently sang “Cancer, kiss my cooley,” when receiving treatment.

The foundation includes the Kiss of HOPE program, which works to give families living with pediatric brain cancer gifts, wishes or other support to the child. Stacey Elders, who raised most of her funds through donations from longtime insurance clients, estimates her contribution will help provide two such “Kisses.”

Seems like a fair trade to her after traversing the Lake Shore Drive course in one hour, 59 minutes.

“That’s a long way to run,” Elders said, “and it was a really big accomplishment for me to manage it and to finish it. But that said, this particular run was for Carter and for CKMC and the kids who are not going to make it to where I’m at. My stuff is totally treatable.”

Elders, who has four children, figures this is just the beginning of her running-for-a-cause circuit. She was happy to spread CKMC’s message in her first endeavor.

“Kind of off your radar. Cancer awareness is everywhere, but I guess what the general public thinks is smoking and lung cancer in adults,” She said. “What you don’t know is how young these kids can be diagnosed and what they go through. There’s just not a lot of spotlight on that research. It’s really wonderful what they’re doing.”

Far and Spear: Team World Vision also was represented at the Chicago Half Marathon, but one of its most well-traveled members took a much-deserved breather.

St. Charles resident Steve Spear on Friday reached New York City about five months after leaving Los Angeles on a cross-country run for his Running For Water initiative. Spear, as part of Team World Vision, aims to raise $1.5 million to provide a clean water and sanitation system for a Kenyan village of $30,000.

Speaking on a YouTube video filmed on the New York side of the George Washington Bridge, Spear relayed that while the running portion is over, the fundraising goal is ongoing.

In July, Spear’s daughter, Chelsea, said her father had raised $129,000.

Senior moments: Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles hosted its annual age 50-plus tournament Saturday and Sunday, crowning winners in eight age divisions.

Players ages 50 to 69 played 18 holes each on the two days, while those 70 and older played nine holes on both days.

Here’s a look at the champions:

• 50-54: David Newland, 144

• 55-59: Ken Harris, 165

• 60-64: Chris Hansen, 161

• 65-69: Rick Carlson, 152

• 70-74: Dave Davis, 83

• 75-79: Jim Sons, 89

• 80-84: Jim Breslin, 97

• 85-89: Miles Burns and Chester Cichon, 117
